Katharagama deviyo also called,Skanda kumar,Kartikeya is a guardian deity of Sri Lanka . A popular deity who is cconsidered to be very powerful ,shrines dedicated to Kataragama deiyo are found in many places of the country .sinhalese buddhist believe him also as a divine patron of the Buddha sasana in Sri Lanka .An ancient temple dedicated to God Katharagama ,know as Ruhunu Maha Katharagama Devalaya is situated in the South -Eastern town of Kataragama in Monaragala District of Uva province .
Today ruhunu maha katharagama devalaya has become a temple which attracts and unites peapole of different religious and faiths.Thousands of devotees from Sri Lanka and other part of the world visit this temple daily .katharagama deviyo is identified with God Skanda of Hindu tradition,who is called as Murugn by the Tamil peapole.There is also an identical gurdian deity of Mahayana Buddhism ,know as Skanda .
Katharagama deviyo is native and long - celibrated in Sri Lanka lore and legend.since an inseparable connection between katharagama deviyo and his domain has existed.
According to some legends god katharagama originally lived in the Mount Kailsh in Himalayas and had a divine consort by the name of Thevani,before moving to katharagama in Sri Lanka .After settling down at katharagama in South Eastern Sri Lanka.he had fallen in love with Valli,a beautiful miden princess who had been raised by the indigenous Veddahs.Later Valli became the second consort of God katharagama and transfigured as a deity.
