Ravana is a Multi-headed rakshasa king of the island of Sri lanka ,and the chief antogonist in the hindu epic Ramayanaya.in the Ramayana Ravana is describe as the eldest son of sage Viharava and Kaikesi .He abducted prince rama's wife Sita and took her to his kindom of Lanka,where held her in the shoka vatika.Rama's with the support  of vanara king sugriva and his army of Vanara's ,launched an invasion agnst Ravana in Sri Lanka .Ravana was subsequently slain and Ramarescued his beloved wife Sita.

Ravana is widely prortrayed as being an evil character ,thought he is also a lerned scholar.He was well versed in the six shartras and the four vedas,including the Shiva Tandava stotra .Ravana is also considered to be the most revered devotee of shiva .image of are of ten seen associated with shiva at temples. He also appears in the buddhist Mahayana text Lankavatara sutra,in buddhist jatakas as well as in join Ramayan's .
The world Ravana means "roaring" the opposite of ralsravna which means to "herd distinctly" both Ravana and and visravana who is commonly knows as kubera.are considered to be patronymics derived from ,sons of vishrava.
